Inspired by the book I am currently reading, Endless Forms Most Beautiful - The New Science of Evo Devo by Sean B. Carroll. Few months ago I attended a public lecture held by a young PhD student about a new strand of science emerging: evolutionary developemental biology, or evo devo for short. I was mesmerised. He mentioned this book so I, driven by curiosity, got it. Evo devo is basically genetics, embryology and evolutionary biology combined and made possible by the newest advances of experimental methods and technology - finally we get a sneak-peek at how exactly the transition from genotype to phenotype occurs, how cells "know" what to do. And as a bonus, it is so beautiful! The cell specialisation is governed by so called hox genes, which can be made visible with a coloring agent that glows in ultraviolet light - stripes, spots, explosion of patterns. That's the glowy thingy bottom left in the picture, a drosophila embryo. Who says that non-fiction scientific literature can't be subject to fanart.

I used a very experimental technique to draw this. I used COPIC markers on ORIS PEARLproof semi-matte proofing paper, which is a special paper used for FOGRA certified proofs in offset printing. Lucky me, working in a printing house :] I snatched a small piece.
COPICs behave very very strangely on it, since they partially melt away the coating of the paper and when they dry, they can be wiped away again. It has the effect and feel of drawing onto glass, I think. stock reference used for the pose: [link]

It's amazing! ^^

well, both :] I am studying molecular biology and I work as a junior researcher, developing techniques for making genetically modified animals.

Very, very interesting and imaginative...
The little glass-like squares really caught my eye, and I love how the figure is placed, posed, and colored. This is a nice picture, and it was interesting reading how it inspired you. :]

Je to doslova mesmerizing! Perfektna, zaujimava technika.

Len tak mimochodom, boli v The Globe nejake zenske postavy? Lebo v Mali Bohove neboli.. tak ci to on tak robi bezne..

Mali Bohove bola skvela kniha :) Pratchett ma vela zenskych postav - menej ako muzskych, ale tie zenske su prepracovanejsie, v mnohych pripadoch vyznamnejsie a vacsinou tie, co hybu dejom. Zalezi od knizky. V The Globe je taka najdolezitejsia zenska postava Kralovna Elfov - inak volana Dama.

I love you just for doing science fanart.

I also love you as a fellow evo-devo fan (and evo-devo researcher wannabe).

Plus, it's a nice picture, but that's just the icing ;)

Just to be pedantic, would Hox gene expression in an actual Drosophila embryo ever look like that? Your stripes are like pair-rule stripes than any Hox gene expression I can think of.

I guess eve could almost qualify as a Hox gene =P

Then again, it's art, not scientific illustration, so maybe this is not the right place for pedantry :D

nice to find others here! Science is a wonderful source of inspiration, especially bioscience. When I was drawing the bottom part of the picture I unfortunately didn't have the book handy to base the larva on the pictures in it so I just made it closely resembling what I remembered - I guess you can say it is loosely based on pair-rule stripes, though they are narrower and leave bigger gaps on front and back parts of the embryo. Also, the cells aren't all the same size, which bothered me in the beginning but then I thought, it's just art, an appreciation of the subject, not an exact illustration of it. Glad you like it despite the freedoms I took :]
